At the age of three Sampha Sisay's father brought a piano into his family home. It was to distract his his kids from the television. It eventually became an extremely important item in Sampha's life; sticking with him throughout the thick and thins of life.
When Sampha was ten his father passed away from cancer. His mother would later pass away from the same disease in 2015. It was the period before his mother's death was when Sampha wrote his debut album "Process."
"Process" is an album that shows a man at peace after such great pains in his life. Even after everything that he has gone through "Process" is not an angry album or an album filled with rage.
"Blood on Me," the second song on the album is the darkest. The high energy song's centerpiece is the anxiety and paranoia that Sampha suffered through during his darkest times. "I swear they smell the blood on me" he sings with a heavy breath as if he recorded the song while he was on the run away from everything that pained him.
Songs like "Kora Sings" and "Timmy's Prayer," which is co-produced by Kanye West, also address the personal issues that Sampha was going through while he was writing them. "Kora," a more high energy song, has a spacey feel to it. The sound of the song feels like we are exploring another planet with him. The energy of the song mask the raw emotions of the lyrics, it may even be a metaphor for Sampha's own emotions and fear of loss.
But the stand out on the album is "(No One Knows Me) Like the Piano." It's a beautiful ode to the piano that stayed by his side through thick and thin. To him the piano represents the love of his parents, and you really feel that love in this song.
The title of the album, Process, is definitely what Sampha shows in this album. Losing someone and handling that loss is a process and through the ups and downs of this album you feel and go through that process with him.
